BMX pro dirt jumper riding high with annual event
Las Vegas local Ricardo Laguna has taken his love of BMX riding and turned it into an international career. He just won the 2011 Latin America King of Dirt in Costa Rica and he’s again participating in this year’s Extreme Thing on March 26 at Desert Breeze Park. The event features Laguna’s own BMX and MT Bikes Dirt Jump Challenge and Rail Jam. “My favorite thing about living in Las Vegas is that you have everything at your fingertips,” he said. “From casinos to the best restaurants and nightlife, the desert, lakes, mountains and, of course, grade-A dirt to build BMX jumps in my backyard.” He recently spoke to Emma Trotter about his Vegas favorites.
Some of my favorite hot spots are Firefly, Peppermill on the Strip and this hole-in-the-wall Mexican shop call the Hacienda on Lake Mead. Most recently I ate at the Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip and enjoyed their new menu.
Nights on the town
I don’t go out too much, but when I do, I usually hit up Fremont Street’s Beauty Bar and The Griffin, The Artisan, Lavo, Tao, The Bank at Bellagio, the Playboy Club at Palms and sometimes Savile Row at Luxor.
I love to head to Town Square or the Premium Outlets off Charleston Boulevard. I do love John Varvatos at the Hard Rock and Caesars Palace. They usually dress me for red carpet events and I always feel fun and funky!
I like to go out to Apex to ride dirt bikes and love to finish the night away and keep it old school at the drive in movie theater off Carey Avenue.
The Beatles LOVE show was great. I laughed for days after seeing Carrot Top’s show at Luxor. Believe it or not, I love magic shows and I have seen so many it is too hard to choose. My favorite Cirque du Soleil show, hands down, is Zumanity.
Skate parks throughout the city. Break-N-Bread Academy Skate Park has been my most recent local attraction for jumping into the foam pit. I normally warm up on Pole Position Raceway electric go-carts, but when I am ready, I hit up the big boy toys at Exotics Racing out at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. I hop on the Lambos where I can drive at 150 miles per hour.
