Kevin Nealon commenced a busy season of stand-up appearances with a lament to the Showtime series that’s provided him with his most high-profile role of the 21st century. “Shooting final scene of Weeds right now,” read the top of Nealon’s Twitter feed on the last evening in July. “Wait … is there a lump in my throat or is that a pot bud?” It was a lump, of course, as Nealon has long maintained a smoke-free, vegetarian lifestyle that enabled him to become a father in the September of his years as well as stay on top of his game.

Frequent supporting roles in movies kept him in the public eye after his run on Saturday Night Live, but the end of Weeds segues into a busy stand-up schedule with perhaps his highest visibility ever. Like his idol Steve Martin, who performed Weeds’ theme song in a banjo duet with him for the final episode, Nealon started out in stand-up. Unlike Martin, he never lost his passion for performing live.
