Every year, dozens of acts that play Coachella schedule concurrent dates here. Thus far, Coachella’s country-music sister festival, Stagecoach, hasn’t had the same impact, but this year at least one Stagecoach act is stopping in town.

While big-name country headliners play Vegas pretty regularly, critically beloved alt-country acts like Sturgill Simpson are less common. Simpson’s second album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, was one of the most acclaimed albums of 2014, mixing the old-fashioned country of artists like Waylon Jennings and the progressive sounds of modern indie music. He’s versatile enough to be booked at both Stagecoach and Coachella, and has opened for country artists both current (Zac Brown Band) and classic (Willie Nelson).

Simpson’s exactly the kind of act Vegas doesn’t see often enough, and we can only hope it’s a sign of things to come.
