Once upon a philosophical time, Henry David Thoreau noted: “Our life is frittered away by detail.” Thoreau’s solution: “Simplify, simplify.” Fortunately for us, Thoreau stuck to the life of the mind, rather than flame out as the producer of a Las Vegas production show—say, the spectacularly bountiful Jubilee at Bally’s.

Strip history is written all over this 34-year-old survivor of “Old Vegas,” still shimmering with showgirls (and boys), cool-crazy costumes, rainbow-hued headdresses and feather boas, seriously sexy, bra-free flesh and over-the-top set pieces to keep your eyes happily spinning counterclockwise as they roll over you in waves. Long an iconic moment is the re-creation of the Titanic’s sinking, as well as the epic biblical depiction of Samson and Delilah (a lollapalooza overflowing with spectacle, slave girls and codpieces). Performers materialize in unconventional fashion, popping up on side balconies and descending on platforms. Music spans genres, from the Jackson Five to the Gershwin brothers.

Don’t forget the show’s trademark: a galaxy’s worth of sequins and rhinestones that sparkle enough light to put the sun out of business.
