Although he’s one of the biggest stars in modern rock, Jack White isn’t always a champion of modernity. White, who plays Las Vegas Feb. 4, started as singer and guitarist for the White Stripes, who combined gritty blues and garage-rock influences with a more current alt-rock sound, influencing a whole series of bands that followed. When the White Stripes broke up in 2011, he still had plenty on his plate. White’s non-Stripes bands include The Raconteurs with Brendan Benson and The Dead Weather with Alison Mosshart of The Kills. Both acts released two albums each, to critical acclaim and commercial success, but are on hiatus while White focuses on his solo career.

White’s second solo album, Lazaretto, was released this past June, and he’s also become a bit of a music mogul thanks to his company Third Man Records. In keeping with his old-school affection, White has focused on producing vinyl releases of his own music as well as classic reissues and new recordings from other artists. Loretta Lynn, Insane Clown Posse and Conan O’Brien have put out vinyl singles and albums on Third Man, and the company has expanded to include a recording studio and record store in its Nashville location. Whether as a performer, a producer or a record-label head, White exhibits exquisite and eclectic taste that blends the classic with the modern.
