For the past four years, Art Alexakis of Everclear has been organizing the Summerland tour, a package featuring his band and other ’90s alt-rock favorites. Each summer, they re-create a bit of the feel of a radio-station festival from around 1997, with artists like Live, Gin Blossoms, Lit, Soul Asylum and more performing on past tours. This year, in addition to Everclear, the bill features Fuel, American Hi-Fi and Toadies, three bands that all had big radio hits during alt-rock’s ’90s and early ’00s heyday.

Everclear, of course, had a number of hits thanks to Alexakis’ catchy songwriting. Everclear’s “Santa Monica,” “I Will Buy You a New Life,” “Father of Mine” and “Wonderful” shared the airwaves with singles from this year’s touring partners, including Fuel’s “Shimmer” and “Bad Day,” American Hi-Fi’s “Flavor of the Weak” and Toadies’ “Possum Kingdom.” All four bands have undergone shifts over the years, including lineup changes and reunions, but they’re all currently led by their original singers, and American Hi-Fi features the band’s original lineup. As he’s proven four times over, Alexakis knows how to put together a bill that balances nostalgia with musical talent.
