Thanks to acts like Mumford & Sons and Old Crow Medicine Show, bluegrass and Americana have gone from small-scale festivals and niche audiences to trendy chart-topping singles and spots in some of the country’s hottest music festivals. Trampled by Turtles may be a little more subdued than those other acts, but the Minnesota folk/bluegrass quintet has managed to ride the same wave of popularity, playing festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo and having their songs featured in TV shows and movies.

With members who have backgrounds in both heavy metal and jam bands, Trampled by Turtles has been able to infuse traditional music with the energy and excitement of rock ’n’ roll. The band’s seventh album, Wild Animals, was released last year, and All Music said that the band members “continue to push the outer limits of folk and bluegrass playing light against darkness, delivering one of their most thoughtful and downtempo albums to date.” That may not be the same as the audience-friendly pop style that has helped some of their peers top the charts, but it represents the progressive sensibilities of a band still rooted in tradition.
