Martin Short is far more than just a comedian. While most of the performers in The Mirage’s Aces of Comedy series are stand-up comedians, spending an hour or so telling jokes, Short puts on the equivalent of a one-man show, incorporating impressions, characters and audience interaction. It’s like watching a solo variety show, and it’s amazing that, more than 40 years into his career, Short still has the boundless energy of his early sketch-comedy days.

It was in those days (on SCTV and later Saturday Night Live) that Short created characters like man-child Ed Grimley and elderly songwriter Irving Cohen, part of his act to this day. Later, he developed obsequious celebrity reporter Jiminy Glick, who had his own TV series and is a staple of Short’s stage show. Short fully embodies those characters and more, while also telling jokes, singing songs and showing classic TV and movie moments. All by himself, he shows off a range of talent that might otherwise take the entire cast of a show like SNL.
