If Monty Python is the Led Zeppelin of comedy troupes, then Canada’s The Kids in the Hall are probably more like The Pixies, beloved by a smallish cult audience during their original run but with increasing influence in the years since. The original run of The Kids in the Hall on TV (1989 to 1995) was broadcast in the U.S. on HBO in its earlier seasons. Repeats on Comedy Central helped make the troupe (Bruce McCulloch, left, Kevin McDonald, Dave Foley, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson) into stars.

All went on to successful acting and writing careers, and they’ve reunited for various projects over the years, including the 1996 movie Brain Candy and the eight-episode 2010 series Death Comes to Town, as well as tours in 2000 and 2008. Although the Kids are known for memorable characters like Buddy Cole and the Chicken Lady, they’ve continued to work on new material when they’ve reunited. They may be elder statesmen of comedy at this point, but they aren’t a nostalgia act.
