Of the various protégés that Prince has nurtured during his decadeslong career, Morris Day and the Time are the ones who’ve gone on to the longest-lasting career of their own. In the early 1980s, Prince recruited members of the Time from the music scene in his hometown of Minneapolis, and the band toured as his opening act, developing a friendly rivalry along the way. With Prince’s guidance, the Time (led by singer and bandleader Day) had a number of funk/R&B hits in the ’80s, including “Jungle Love,” “The Bird” and “Jerk Out.”

These days the touring version of the Time includes Day alongside fellow original members Jellybean Johnson and Monte Moir. Thanks to the popularity of the Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars hit single “Uptown Funk,” which is heavily influenced by the Time, and the band’s recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Time’s music has begun to reach a new generation, allowing them to perform for both longtime fans and new listeners.
