For an Australian, stand-up comedian Jim Jefferies has a pretty keen understanding of U.S policy. His thoughts on gun control, which he’s included in his act since 2013 and were featured in his stand-up special Bare, make the online rounds every time the debate comes up in the news, with advocates on both sides pointing to Jefferies as someone who makes a powerful argument. Although Jefferies isn’t afraid to speak his mind on controversial issues, he isn’t necessarily a political comedian. His style is generally more personal, focused on his relationships with women, his misadventures raising his son and his sometimes harrowing childhood.

Jefferies channeled a lot of that personal material into his comedy series Legit, which ran for two seasons in 2013 and 2014 and starred Jefferies as a less-successful, less-motivated version of himself. Although the series featured plenty of Jefferies’ insult humor, it was also praised by members of the disabled community for its portrayal of the main character’s best friend, a young man with muscular dystrophy. That’s how Jefferies operates: He may pull no punches when it comes to skewering targets he feels are deserving—including himself and his friends—but he also does so with compassion, making sure his audience knows that his anger comes from his desire for people to live up to their potential.
