Rock and roll has a history of deliberate misspellings, with bands like Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Led Zeppelin, Limp Bizkit and many more purposefully changing up the basic words that make up their names. Other than an interestingly spelled name, Scottish indie-pop band Chvrches (pronounced “churches”) doesn’t have much in common with its syntactically challenged forbears. The band’s moody, synth-driven music, reminiscent of ’80s acts like Depeche Mode and New Order, is led by singer Lauren Mayberry’s ethereal vocals, backed up by multi-instrumentalists Iain Cook and Martin Doherty. Cook and Doherty both put in time with influential indie-rock bands (Cook in Aerogramme and The Unwinding Hours, Doherty in The Twilight Sad) before hooking up with Mayberry in 2011.

The band’s 2013 debut album, The Bones of What You Believe, ended up on numerous end-of-year best-of lists and made the top 10 on the album charts in the band’s native Scotland. The most recent Chvrches album, last year’s Every Open Eye, was similarly critically acclaimed and even more commercially successful, making the top 10 on the Billboard album charts in the U.S. All Music called it “an almost uncannily well-crafted second album.” Chvrches’ impeccable pop craftsmanship more than makes up for the band’s inventiveness in spelling.
