Although The Black Crowes have broken up or taken extended hiatuses multiple times since they debuted in 1989, the Southern rock band’s 2015 break-up seems to be sticking. Now that the band he founded with his brother Rich is over, singer Chris Robinson has more time to devote to his other projects, including his solo band, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, founded in 2011 during a previous Crowes hiatus.

While the Crowes’ music could be characterized as meat-and-potatoes rock with a bit of Southern twang, CRB is more expansive and psychedelic, heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead and Canned Heat. Fittingly for a band so indebted to the Dead, CRB also embraces its jam-band side. Robinson and guitarist Neal Casal also compose original music, and they’ve been in the studio working on their fourth album. “You have to have deep music, a soulful experience, because we know the trip, man,” Robinson told Relix about the new CRB material. “We know the vibe. That’s our manifesto.” –Josh Bell
