The Marianas Trench is the deepest point in the Earth’s oceans, plunging nearly seven miles below the surface at its greatest depth. The Canadian band Marianas Trench, by contrast, might not typically be described as deep, although that certainly isn’t a bad thing. The quartet has been releasing bright, fun pop-rock music since the early ’00s. On its last few albums, the band has explored more intricate themes, with lead singer and songwriter Josh Ramsay composing song suites that work as concept albums while also remaining concise and radio-friendly.

The band’s most recent album, 2015’s Astoria, was inspired by action-adventure movies of the 1980s, including The Goonies. Single “One Love” has become the band’s biggest hit outside its native Canada, landing in the top 40 on Billboard’s Adult Pop Songs chart in the U.S. Like fellow Canadian Carly Rae Jepsen, the members of Marianas Trench are poised to bring their upbeat, exuberant pop songs to the world.
