John Waite may be remembered primarily for one song, but that song has had a remarkable shelf life. Waite’s ballad “Missing You” topped the Billboard singles chart when it was released in 1984, and since then it’s consistently popped up in movies, video games and TV shows. It’s also been a hit multiple times over: In 1996, a version by Tina Turner charted in both the U.S. and the U.K. In 1999, country duo Brooks & Dunn’s version was a top 20 hit on the country charts. And Waite himself had a hit with the song for a second time when he re-recorded a duet version of it with Alison Krauss in 2007.

Of course, Waite is more than that one song. He spent time as the frontman for the rock bands The Babys (with hits “Isn’t It Time” and “Every Time I Think of You”) and Bad English (with No. 1 single “When I See You Smile”), and he’s consistently released albums since the late 1970s (the most recent being 2013’s Live All Access). Like his biggest hit, Waite is an enduring classic who has the ability to consistently reach new audiences.
