The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is more of an institution than any particular group of people. Like a symphony orchestra or a dance troupe, the Band features a rotating talent lineup representing a long-running cultural brand, serving as ambassadors of a specific location and artistic vision. In this case, that means the actual Preservation Hall, a New Orleans music venue opened in 1961 with the purpose of promoting and, well, preserving New Orleans jazz as an art form.

The Band is Preservation Hall’s outreach arm, featuring some of the most accomplished jazz musicians the city has. Over the years, dozens of musicians have played in the Band, and the current lineup is led by Ben Jaffe, son of New Orleans jazz legends Allan and Sandra Jaffe, who founded both Preservation Hall and the Jazz Band. The younger Jaffe plays tuba and double bass and serves as the creative director of Preservation Hall itself. Jaffe and the rest of the band members bring decades of New Orleans jazz pedigree to their work as a living, touring embodiment of the city’s musical legacy.
