It’s been nearly 50 years since Aaron Neville had his first hit single, and the R&B star shows no signs of slowing down. As both a solo artist and as part of the Neville Brothers (with his brothers Art, Charles and Cyril), Neville has been a standard-bearer for R&B since the 1960s, as well as a musical icon of his hometown of New Orleans. “Tell It Like It Is,” that first hit from 1966 (which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard singles charts) has been named one of the greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone and covered by artists ranging from Heart (who had a hit with it in 1980) to Nina Simone.

Neville’s other hits as a solo artist include “Everybody Plays the Fool,” “The Grand Tour” and two duets with Linda Ronstadt, “Don’t Know Much” and “All My Life.” Neville’s most recent album, 2013’s My True Story, produced by Don Was and Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, pays homage to the doo-wop songs that influenced Neville as a youth. As a musical legend, Neville both honors the legacy of R&B and is an integral part of it himself.
