Comedian Mike Epps is a big soul fan, and that’s why he’s the marquee name behind the Las Vegas Soul Festival, headlined by soul stars Keith Sweat, Dru Hill and Ginuwine. All were important to the sound of ’90s R&B, with Sweat having a hand in multiple success stories of the New Jack Swing movement. In addition to his own hits, Sweat helped craft hits for Silk and Kut Klose and was part of the supergroup LSG with Gerald Levert and Johnny Gill.

Sweat also produced songs on Dru Hill’s debut album and guided the members through the recording of their fourth album in 2010. Although Dru Hill member Sisqo is probably best known for his solo career (and massive hit “Thong Song”), the group had its own string of hits, including “Never Make a Promise” and “How Deep Is Your Love.” As for Ginuwine, he’s still best known for dance-club staple “Pony,” but he’s been steadily releasing albums since his 1996 debut, including another set for next year. Epps has chosen wisely in his latest celebration of soul music.
