Backed by a six-piece band and four dancers, Solid Gold Soul takes audiences on a “soul-rific” journey back in time. Greg Laster channels James Brown with the godfather of soul’s greatest hits: “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” “I Got You (I Feel Good)” and “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” If you’re wondering if Brown’s famous cape routine makes it into the show, yes it does, as Laster gets a standing ovation on “Please, Please, Please.”

Legendary moments like those keep coming: The jack of all trades Pete Peterkin from America’s Got Talent takes on the role of the piano-playing Ray Charles, embodying his musical styling on “Georgia On My Mind” and “Hit the Road Jack” while Grady Harrell does double duty as Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke, twistin’ the night away.

Marva Scott’s portrayal of the queen of Motown Diana Ross, along with The Supremes, comes alive in “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Baby Love.” Scott also performs a few numbers by Martha Reeves and The Vandellas. Motown’s presence is shown throughout the show, honoring other acts such as The Four Tops and Smokey Robinson.
