Calling Keith Urban a country singer doesn’t completely do him justice. Sure, Urban started out in the U.S. (after beginning his career in New Zealand and Australia) as a Nashville session musician and songwriter, contributing to recordings by artists like the Dixie Chicks, Alan Jackson and Toby Keith. And he used that experience to launch his solo career, racking up country hits like “But for the Grace of God,” “Days Go By,” “You Look Good in My Shirt” and “Sweet Thing.” Over the years, Urban has steadily expanded his sound, and he’s always been influenced by a diverse range of artists.

Urban’s latest album, Ripcord, marks his fifth No. 1 country album. It’s spawned four hit singles so far, with “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16,” “Break on Me,” “Wasted Time” and “Blue Ain’t Your Color” all making it into the top 20 on the country singles charts. Urban’s collaborators on this album include rapper Pitbull, soul/funk guitarist Nile Rodgers and pop-country singer Carrie Underwood, representing his devotion to country, his roots in classic rock and his eagerness to always expand and move forward with his music.
