The sturdy wall that once separated fans from their favorite artists has crumbled to pieces in the digital age. Now all it takes to gain backstage access is a quick social-media follow. One exception? The Protomen.

Since The Protomen’s first live performance some 13 years ago, the eccentric Nashville-based rock band has chosen to operate in a way that’s equal parts unconventional and mysterious. Simply put, The Protomen are an enigma wrapped in about a half-dozen riddles. Here’s what is known: The band’s name and music are inspired by the old Nintendo Mega Man video games, and the eight-person lineup has evolved over the years (there are nearly 20 former members). Most past and present bandmates adopted stage names that are pop-culture nods to films, song titles and fictitious characters (current members include Commander B. Hawkins, Shock Magnum, Gambler Kirkdouglas and Reanimator); they’ve released two studio albums as part of an intended three-part concept series; and they’ve gained a devoted following thanks to high-energy, over-the-top theatrical stage shows that showcase a mix of original material and hard-rock cover tunes. By all accounts, The Protomen have never adopted a slogan, but if they did, it likely would read: “Don’t try to figure us out. Just enjoy the show.”
