More than 30 years after the band released its first album, Megadeth finally took home its first Grammy this past February, with the title track from 2016 album Dystopia winning for Best Metal Performance. You could argue that it’s a travesty the Grammys took so long to recognize one of the best and most influential metal bands of all time, or you could take it as a sign that after all this time, the thrash-metal pioneers led by Dave Mustaine are still getting better.

Dystopia is Megadeth’s 15th studio album and its most well-reviewed in a long time, with All Music saying, “It showcases Mustaine and a crack new version of Megadeth at a creative peak,” and Rolling Stone declaring it “Some of the most vital and menacing thrash that Mustaine has concocted in years.” Mustaine and his various bandmates (almost always including bassist David Ellefson) have been creating metal classics since the early 1980s, including anthems like “Symphony of Destruction,” “Peace Sells,” “Sweating Bullets” and “Hangar 18.” Mustaine remains just as fierce on the guitar and just as passionate in his lyrics as when the band first started, and the Grammy voters are far from the only ones who can recognize that.
