Michael Jackson ONE is more than a stage production. It’s a high-energy dance party. The long-running Cirque du Soleil show celebrates the music, identity and legacy of the best-selling recording artist, who famously dubbed himself the “King of Pop” in later years.

The story follows four young misfits on a mission of self-discovery, yet the plot is really just an excuse to get out of your seat and feel the music. The show is more dance-oriented than most Cirque productions, although it still has its fair share of spectacular stunts.

Jackson’s catalog is so deep and diverse, from the classic Motown of the Jackson 5 to his solo assent to mega-stardom in the ’80s, there’s no shortage of material to redevelop for the stage. Beyond the music, his image, choreography and music videos were so groundbreaking and identifiable, the show almost writes itself—whether it’s the mobster mentality of “Smooth Criminal” or the scary monsters of “Thriller.”

ONE works best when it moves into unexpected territory, like a simulated rainstorm for “Stranger in Moscow” or the rhythmic lights of “Billie Jean.” Even casual fans will recognize most of the songs, which are remixed and mashed-up for audiences to feel the rhythm in a new and different way.
