Some are born to be blue. Some have blueness thrust upon them. Blue Man Group is a mixture of both, with a three-man cast supplemented by swing Blue Men fully versed in the ways of distance marshmallow-catching and tubular percussion instruments. How, exactly, they obtained their distinct cerulean shade remains a mystery, as Blue Men are mute. They do communicate, though, generating joyful musical noises and taking the audience on a sense-heightening voyage of discovery as they apparently try to make sense of the world around them.

The wide-eyed beings were progenitors of the immersive experience, creating an audio-visual extravaganza that falls just short of being overwhelming to the eyes and ears. The bravest audience members are beckoned onstage to join in messy reverse engineering of Twinkies. All are exposed to the Blue Men’s spin on modern art as they demonstrate their techniques to pulse-pounding music by a live band. The bald, black-clad life-forms are also unfamiliar with the ways of aisles but are instinctively expert at climbing over rows of seats without getting blue on the humans occupying them.
