If Memphis Garrett seems familiar, it might be because he appeared on the 10th season of Big Brother in 2008. “If I’ve learned anything from being on that show, it’s to … always think about what I’m going to say before I say it,” Garrett said, laughing. “In nightlife, that’s helpful.”

These days, Garrett is more of a star in the world of nightlife, as director of Life at SLS Las Vegas. He started as a busser for other SBE venues in Los Angeles, which helped shape his own philosophy of empowering his employees to voice ideas, as they could someday rise through the company as well.

“(Some of the best) ideas come from the bussers and servers. They’re the ones there. They’re the ones thinking, ‘You know how awesome it’d be if ...’” That’s how things like Life’s special VIP tables, bottle service horse and other upcoming changes came about, he says.

When he’s not working, Garrett’s favorite hobbies include working on his 1970 Ford Bronco and shooting trap and skeet. He’s looking to start a local “Broncos and Bikes” group ride like one he headed in L.A.

Of course, one has to ask: What is the meaning of Life? “I try to give them the experience that I’d want to have,” he says. “(A) handshake, an introduction … We really want to get to know you. When people (in L.A.) talk about SBE, they talk about it as if they’re part of the company. If we can accomplish that (in Las Vegas), we will succeed.”

Life on Mars

Mars may be known as the red planet, but this cocktail’s color is more reminiscent of the ice-blue suit David Bowie wears in the music video for its namesake song. With Bacardi Superior rum, Grey Goose vodka, Bols blue Curaçao, triple sec, orange and lime juice and a lemon wedge garnish, this sweet and citric libation has an out-of-this-world flavor that will have you planning a return mission or two.
