Q&A: NeNe Leakes
Reality star takes a turn as Zumanity’s Mistress of Sensuality
With her blond hair and brash personality, NeNe Leakes is no stranger to drama. Best known as a cast member on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, the fireball takes on a new role as the Mistress of Sensuality in Zumanity, The Sensual Side of Cirque du Soleil at New York-New York for 10 shows, starting on June 27, as part of the 10th anniversary of the production. Leakes spoke with Las Vegas Magazine’s Susan Stapleton about her upcoming performances.
What made you decide to take the jump from reality TV to a show on the Strip?
Well, I’ve done a lot of shows besides reality. I’ve done theater before and Dancing With the Stars. I love performing. It felt so right. It’s a great show—a little risqué, a little provocative and a little nudity.
You’re taking over for Edie, who usually has the role of the Mistress of Sensuality in Zumanity. Did she have any tips for you?
She does a great job. I will watch the show again and look at it with a different eye. When I saw the show, I didn’t know which part they would offer to me.
There’s some nudity in the show. Will we get to see some skin from you?
Yes, the most skin you will see is my legs and my arms. There will be no nudity here. We’ll be as sexy as we can be but I don’t plan to be nude.
What was the first thing that shocked you in Vegas?
I don’t think anything has shocked me in Vegas, you know. I don’t think I would be shocked. Me being in the entertainment industry, I’ve seen it all.
This is only 10 shows, so you’re getting a taste for live productions. Is this the future for NeNe Leakes?
I’ve done live theater before in off-Broadway shows. I grew up doing theater. It’s just something I’ve always done. It’s very rewarding to me. I love performing before a live audience.
Do you have any favorite restaurants (or activities) in Las Vegas?
It’s kind of strange. I’m always in my casino and never really come out. Nobu, I’ve been there a couple times. I don’t think I’ve ever been to Vegas and didn’t come to Tao. I do come out to go shopping.
