Both more than 40 years into their careers, with dozens of albums, hit songs and band members behind them, Journey and The Doobie Brothers are still reliably filling arenas—including Vegas on Aug. 27. That’s a testament to the enduring power of their music, and also to the people who make up those bands today, both veteran members and relative newcomers.

For Journey, that ranges from founding members Neal Schon on guitar and Ross Valory on bass to singer Arnel Pineda, who joined the band in 2007 and helped bring them to a new level of popularity. Pineda was the singer in a Journey cover band when the members of Journey discovered him on YouTube, and his uncanny vocal talents combined with his underdog success story have brought a new audience to the veteran rockers.

Doobie Brothers original members Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons (both on guitar and vocals) anchor the band, in a lineup that also includes acclaimed bluegrass musician John Cowan on bass and Little Feat co-founder Bill Payne on keyboards. It’s a night of hits, with new and old members alike bringing those songs to longtime fans and a new generation of listeners who help arenas stay filled.
