Let’s be Frank—assuming you’ve got the gowns, wigs, cosmetics, jewelry and generally deep well of fabulousness. Otherwise, just let Frank speak frankly since his frankness is so very … Frank.

“I never try to be a woman like Caitlyn Jenner tries to be a woman,” says female impersonator Frank Marino, who is marking 30 years as a Strip mainstay by headlining the Linq’s celebrity drag show Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas and the former An Evening at La Cage at the now-closed Riviera.

“It’s not about being a girl; it’s about being a Vegas icon. I want to be something crazy like the top of a wedding cake,” says the New York-born showman who built his career on channeling Joan Rivers.

Per the cake analogy, how about a slice of onstage Frank? There’s his joke about the hooker and crack—nope, cancel that. No R-rated jokes in a G-rated story. You need to go see the show.

As for Frank’s life journey, let’s employ the ultimate Joan-ism:

Can we talk … about your introduction to drag performing? “I saw Flip Wilson on TV. I remember asking my parents, ‘What does drag mean?’ But I never thought I’d do that. I thought I was going to be a doctor.”

Can we talk … about the turning point? “For Halloween, like any law-abiding gay guy, I went out in drag and got an agent—that night! Like Lana Turner, discovered at the ice cream counter. He said, ‘I can get you booked with my Michael Jacksons and Boy Georges.’ I was like, ‘Hello!’”

Can we talk … about choosing Joan? “I couldn’t sing, so I needed to do a comedian. At the time, it was Joan Rivers or Phyllis Diller. I took the lesser of two evils, because Joan had glamour. I’d run into her on the street. I accidentally sat next to her on a plane. She was behind me on Pirates of the Caribbean. There was no other reason than I was born to impersonate her.”

Try again for a slice of Frank? There’s the one about why he/she couldn’t be a lesbian—oops, skip that, too. See show for punch line.

Can we talk … about how after Joan sued you in 1986 for using her material, you became close? “We made friends and she went out of her way for me many times. I went to the funeral. With her dying, I was going to take it out of the show, but (daughter) Melissa said, ‘If anyone would want you to continue, it would be my mom.’”

Can we talk … about your most memorable show? “My partner, Alex (Schechter), stopped the show one night and proposed to me. People were on Skype around the world and Joan was on video. That was the standout.”

Can we talk … about if, 30 years later, you remember your first show? “It had Liberace in the audience, Redd Foxx, Sammy Davis Jr. I was like a kid in a candy store. Now that’s history, but I’m still here and I’m not history yet.”

One last try for a slice? Maybe the one about that tight little dress? Oh, what the heck: “If I turn sideways, you’ll see the operation wasn’t a success.”

Now that’s a drag.
