Perhaps no other act has debuted its premiere album the way the London-based indie rock duo of Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West did. Perhaps it shouldn’t have worked. But a musical pairing this talented was likely to break through one way or another—it just so happens they did it completely their own way.

Starting in September 2014, the electro-pop unit recorded and released one song every month for a year. It began with the moody, grooved-up “Body Gold” and ended in September 2015 with the chill, equally as addictive “Plans.” By the time the experiment had ended, they had compiled an entire record of smooth, synth-laden cuts and created a rabid following for their live shows.

Vander Gucht takes the lead on vocals with West adding layers to the harmonies. Somewhere in the vein of Phantogram, Chvrches and The XX, the two have figured out how to maximize their vocal and instrumental interplay and have proven that their success, no matter how they achieved it, is warranted. In a world of social media, where every artist has the chance to put their work up on the Internet, Oh Wonder somehow found a way to cut through the noise and make themselves exceptional.
