Carlos Vives is one of the biggest stars in Latin music and has helped put music from his native Colombia on the international map, but his music career started modestly, when he parlayed his success as a telenovela actor into his 1986 debut album Por Fuera y Por Dentro. Vives’ first three albums didn’t make much of an impression, but in 1991 he combined his acting and music passions by recording the soundtrack albums for his telenovela Escalona, scoring his first big hits. From there, Vives evolved a sound that combines traditional Colombian music with pop, rock and funk, scoring more hits in Latin America and becoming one of the first Colombian artists to win a Grammy.

Since then, Vives has won a total of two Grammys and nine Latin Grammys, and his international hits include “La Gota Fria,” “Fruta Fresca,” “Dejame Entrar” and “La Bicicleta,” a duet with fellow Colombian star Shakira. Both “La Bicicleta” and recent single “Al Filo de Tu Amor” (with its music video shot in New York City) are set for Vives’ upcoming album, which will be out later this year. It’s the latest step in his decades-long reign as a Latin music superstar.
