Since their formation in Southern California in 2006, The Growlers’ endearing hodgepodge of surf, psychedelia, pop and garage rock (dubbed “Beach Goth”) has gained a steady cult following. The group’s sound is highlighted by sparkling guitars, catchy melodies crooned by lead singer Brooks Nielsen and a retro vibe reminiscent of rock bands from the early 2000s. So it came as no surprise when Julian Casablancas of The Strokes decided to get involved with the band’s 2016 release City Club, producing and releasing the album on his label, Cult Records.

Casablancas’ new wave imprint was immediately obvious, as the band experimented with chunky bass grooves and a bumping disco feel, mixed with the boozy aura that is distinctly Growler-esque. The record’s lead single, “I’ll Be Around,” was so danceable that it even caught the attention of the ever-gyrating Ellen DeGeneres, who claimed The Growlers were one of her new favorite groups, and invited them to perform on her daytime show.

While this new and accessible version of the group hints that they may leave that lovable low-fi sound behind, The Growlers are the same tatted up trouble seekers they’ve always been; the maturity, growth and exploration is strictly for the music.
