Anyone who loves the Coen brothers’ cult classic The Big Lebowski is a Gipsy Kings fan, whether they know it or not. The band’s flamenco-style Spanish-language version of the Eagles’ “Hotel California” is a highlight of the movie’s eclectic soundtrack. The Gipsy Kings’ music is unique, combining elements of traditional Spanish styles with modern pop, rock and funk, and it’s always been a family affair, led by cousins Nicolas Reyes and Tonino Baliardo, who founded the group with their respective brothers in the early 1980s.

Even as they’ve achieved worldwide success, the Gipsy Kings have retained the regional style they grew up with. Songs like “Bamboléo,” “Volare” and even the Kings’ version of “Hotel California” represent cultural outreach, and they’re also catchy tunes that get people singing along even if they don’t understand the words.
