Other metal bands from the ’80s may have been more commercially successful, but possibly no other band from the era was as influential as Slayer. The Southern California thrash band never sold as many records as fellow thrashers Metallica or Megadeth, but also never changed their sound to be radio-friendly or made any concessions to MTV. They still managed to crack the Billboard top 10 with 1994’s Divine Intervention, 2006’s Christ Illusion and 2015’s Repentless, and their consistency means that changes in trends haven’t affected their ability to tour and release albums to a dedicated fan base.

Lamb of God is in a similar position: Other heavy bands from the ’00s sold more records and played bigger venues, but the Virginia band, much like Slayer (not surprisingly, a key influence), has stuck to its musical convictions, making a significant impact on bands that have come after. Also like Slayer, LoG has managed to reach plenty of dedicated fans (the band’s last four albums made the Billboard top 10) without pandering to the mainstream. A team-up between the two bands makes perfect sense, then, and the show (also featuring Polish metal veterans Behemoth) will be a night of nonstop uncompromising metal.
