Brian Setzer has always been retro. In the 1980s, Setzer was at the helm of the Stray Cats, a rockabilly-style trio that harkened back to the early roots of rock and roll. While his peers were exploring synthesizers and developing the new wave sound, Setzer and his bandmates were looking back to Sun Studios artists like Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins for inspiration. The Stray Cats scored hits with songs like “Rock This Town” and “Stray Cat Strut” before breaking up in 1984, although they’ve reunited numerous times.

In his later solo career, Setzer was even more retro, reaching back to the swing era with his Brian Setzer Orchestra and releasing a hit cover of Louis Prima’s “Jump, Jive an’ Wail” in 1998 during a brief ’90s swing revival. Setzer’s current tour is dubbed Rockabilly Riot!, featuring a leaner band than his Brian Setzer Orchestra shows, with a focus on throwback rock and roll, including Stray Cats songs and plenty of covers. No matter what the era, Setzer is an expert at making the sounds of the past come to life.
