For Easy Star All-Stars, it's all about the concept
The Easy Star All-Stars are as much a concept as they are a band. In fact, there is only one constant member—producer Michael Goldwasser. The New York club kid prodigy became one of the hottest producers in reggae music while working with acts like Toots and the Maytals, Matisyahu, Sugar Minott and Hatikva 6, the most well-known reggae band in Israel.
Using his resources and his musical prowess, Goldwasser put together Easy Star All-Stars, which features rotating musicians and singers most famously taking on iconic albums to cover in dub/reggae fashion.
In 2003, ESAS released Dub Side of the Moon, its interpretation of the seminal Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon. Songs like “Money” find a tight groove with infectious vocals and rhythmic hooks. Since its release, it has been a mainstay on the Billboard Reggae Charts. Most importantly, it comes with instructions to synchronize it to The Wizard of Oz, creating a sensory wonderland.
Other albums ESAS have covered include Radiohead’s OK Computer (Radiodread), The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band), and Michael Jackson’s Thriller (Thrillah).
This talented and imaginative group can make just about any song irie.
