It may not have the name recognition of American Idol or The Voice, but the short-lived singing competition show Nashville Star turned out to be a surprisingly fruitful source for future country stars. Fourth-season winner Chris Young went on to become one of the top-selling artists in country music, starting with his debut single, “Drinkin’ Me Lonely,” released just a few months after his 2006 win.

Since then, Young has racked up a series of country hits, including the No. 1 country singles “The Man I Want to Be,” “I’m Comin’ Over” and “Think of You.” Last month, he released his latest single, “Losing Sleep,” set to appear on his upcoming sixth album. Unlike many reality TV contestants, Young isn’t flashy or over the top; he’s a country craftsman who puts more effort into his songwriting and his singing than into his image. That focus on talent may be one reason why Nashville Star faded quickly as a TV show, but the musicians it showcased have enjoyed thriving careers.
