The word “legend” gets thrown around far too frequently—and one could argue recklessly—in today’s entertainment world. An actress is cast in three consecutive hit movies, and suddenly, she’s the next Streep. A comedian sells out two nights at Madison Square Garden, and suddenly, he’s the next Pryor. Hogwash.

Legends, much like Rome, aren’t built in a day. Or a year. Or even a decade. Rather, they’re defined by a sustained run of success that leaves indelible cultural imprints at given points on a career continuum. Like, say, co-writing one of the greatest comedy routines of all time (2000 Year Old Man). Or writing, directing and starring in some of the most iconic films in cinematic history (The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein). Or turning one of those iconic films (The Producers) into a Broadway smash hit. Or sporting an IMDB page that features 52 acting credits, 43 writing credits, 24 soundtrack credits, 23 producer credits and 12 director credits. Or being one of just 12 artists whose depth of talent is such that their trophy case holds Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

We speak, of course, of Mel Brooks, one of the true legends of comedy who has been tickling our funny bone for more than six decades. Now comes this rare treat: An opportunity to see a living legend host a retrospective of his remarkable life and career with a stage show simply titled An Evening With Mel Brooks. During his two-night stop at Wynn Las Vegas, Brooks will regale the audience with stand-up comedy, share behind-the-scenes stories, show clips from his collection of cinematic gems (c’mon, you know you’re already reciting dialogue like, “Good night, Frau Blücher!” and “If you shoot him, you’ll just make him mad!” before you’re even finished reading this sentence!) and conduct a question-and-answer session.

That Brooks chose to stage this event during the same week he celebrates his 91st birthday might be surprising to some. Really, though, it’s just further proof of his undying commitment to the art of comedy. Legend, indeed.
