REO Speedwagon has succeeded like very few bands in rock ’n’ roll history. From a sheer sales standpoint, they are one of the biggest-selling acts of the 1980s, with the album Hi Infidelity going diamond and selling over 10 million copies. While most people consider Speedwagon, a staple of soft rock radio, to be megastars of that genre, it is often forgotten that these guys can, and do, rock!

The five-piece band, which formed in Champaign, Ill., spent a decade-plus as hard rockers before easing into adult contemporary icons. Listen to that storm siren intro to “Ridin’ the Storm Out,” a blaster that carries the momentum of the introduction to the finish line of the last note. Or check out the high-energy “157 Riverside Avenue,” a live set piece that features fierce vocal and guitar interplay.

That’s not to discount the ballads. There is a reason the love songs are what Speedwagon is most known for. “Keep On Loving You” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling” both reached No. 1 on the singles charts and remain the favorites of countless hand-holding couples. No matter the decade, REO Speedwagon knows how to “Roll with the Changes” and keep their adoring fans happy with both waves of nostalgia and adrenaline-pumping hooks.
