There are seemingly as many ways to put together a concert as there are, well, concerts themselves. One of the more common strategies: Go the nostalgia route by filling the bill with artists of yesteryear who produced numerous hits. Such was the path taken by organizers of the Freestyle Old School Jam. This year’s 15th anniversary lineup showcases 10 of the top freestyle, pop and dance acts of the 1980s and ’90s that once landed a combined 54 songs on the Billboard Hot 100. Four of those artists—Stevie B., Lisa Lisa (of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam), Exposé and Taylor Dayne—recorded 31 of those hits, including 18 that climbed into the Top 10. What’s more, all four made it to No. 1, from Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam’s “Head to Toe” in June 1987 to Stevie B.’s “Because I Love You (The Postman Song)” in December 1990. All chart-toppers figure to be part of a lengthy blast-from-the-past set list, along with “Seasons Change” (Exposé) and “Love Will Lead You Back” and “Tell It to My Heart” (Dayne), “Tootsee Roll” (69 Boyz) and “Whoomp (There It Is)” (Tag Team) and more. Break out your most comfortable dancing shoes—it’s going to be a long night.
