Today, Selina Rankin says, “I’m proud of myself for overcoming my obstacles and taking care of myself. I’m proud, but humble.” Rankin lost her mother, a single parent, a few days before her 18th birthday. “I had to grow up faster than most, but I had a good head on my shoulders and was raised with a good upbringing.”
Rankin is also proud of her accomplishments, which includes her current position as lead cocktail server at Troy Liquor Bar at Golden Nugget. Before joining the nightclub, she worked at several venues on the Strip as a bartender, but a couple of years ago she was offered an opportunity to join Golden Nugget. She decided to take her talents to the downtown property, starting out as a cocktail server at the Rush Lounge. When Troy Liquor Bar opened, she joined the nightclub and worked her way up from cocktail server to the lead server position. “When it comes to the cocktail servers, everything runs through me,” Rankin says. “The other servers come to me—I’m the communication between management.” The other part of her job is taking care of customers, and that’s her favorite part, she says. “I’m a people person naturally,” she says. “Customers always compliment me about being sweet and friendly and taking care of them. I take pride in that.”
When Rankin isn’t taking care of Troy’s customers, she’s taking care of customers on the links as part of an all-female golf caddie team, The Platinum Tees. “We’re your companion caddie for the day, model caddies,” she says. “You gotta know your golf.” And she does, so much so that you’ll find her working on her own swing occasionally.
