Growing up in the small town of Brawley, Calif., Louisa Hernandez was a shy girl. Today, she’s shed her shell and works at one of the most exciting bars in one of the most exciting cities—she’s a bartender at Cabo Wabo Cantina inside Miracle Mile Shops. “I love the environment of bartending,” Hernandez says. “It kinda feels like you’re just hanging out with friends. You get to meet a lot of people. I was shy growing up, but you learn to be outgoing and personable. … People are here to have a good time and they want to get to know their bartenders, ya know? So, you’re the life of the party behind the bar.”

Hernandez has been entertaining Cabo Wabo guests for more than four years. In fact, when she moved to Vegas from her hometown, it was the first job she applied for as a bartender.

“This is a pretty wild place, we’re right in the middle of the Strip,” she says. “People always come here and have a good time,” especially fans of the bar and restaurant’s owner, rocker Sammy Hagar. “His fans come here all the time to try his tequila,” Hernandez says. “We’re known for our margaritas and our huge selection of tequila.”

So, when Hernandez isn’t entertaining guests behind the bar, what does she do to have a good time? “I love to travel,” she says. “It’s one of my hobbies now. Some of my favorite spots I’ve been to are Punta Cana, Miami, Cancun and Cabo San Lucas.” And this spring Hernandez is traveling to Thailand.

We say, not bad for a shy girl from a small town.

If you ask Hernandez what one drink she can make especially well, she’ll tell you the Vojito, plus it’s one of her favorite drinks on the cocktail menu. The Vojito is a seriously tasty cocktail and a refreshing twist on the classic mojito. The cocktail is a mix of Devotion Black and Blue vodka, fresh blackberries and blueberries, lime juice and mint, and topped with soda water.

A great way to try a few of Cabo Wabo Cantina’s cocktails is to stop by during its half-off happy hour, Monday through Friday, 3-5 p.m. Indulge in half-off select margaritas, sangrias, shots, draft beer and even select appetizers.
