In an attractive ’40s-era storefront at Flamingo Las Vegas, you’ll find The Bakery at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, a cute bakery hawking Italian bread and pastries. Wooden counters and display shelves with vintage-style product line the walls, and to one side, you’ll find a small hallway. Head down it, and you’ll enter the restaurant, where photos on the walls recall the days of Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky, two mob associates who rose to power in the growing city of Las Vegas, and who opened the Flamingo in the ’40s.  

The cuisine here consists of classic steakhouse dishes like the enormous seafood tower, available in two sizes, premium and grand. The premium version piles on Maine lobster, oyster from both the East and West coasts, poached shrimp and Alaskan king crab, while the grand version increases the amount and adds shrimp ceviche as well. Jumbo lump crab cakes and coconut shrimp will satisfy smaller appetites. 

Other apps include a fresh-baked bread board with several butters and salts, charcuterie and truffle beef carpaccio with anchovy aioli. Lobster bisque is smooth, while heirloom beet salad with blue cheese and a pomegranate gastrique locks in fresh flavors. 

If you are a steak lover, you’ve got a few options both wet- and dry-aged, like 21-day wet-aged filet mignons and ribeyes or the 60-day dry-aged ribeyes and New York strips. For a larger portion, consider a tomahawk ribeye. Cap them with such items as truffle butter, hollandaise sauce, peppercorn sauce and more, or add on a lobster tail, Alaskan king crab leg or scampi, among other options.

There are plenty of staple dishes to try out as well, like the butternut squash-stuffed chicken, Colorado lamb chops with chimichurri sauce, Chilean sea bass with roasted red pepper romesco sauce, or diver scallops. Classic sides range from baked potato to Brussels sprouts.  

Get a great deal with the fall prix fixe menu, which serves up a flavorful Caesar salad, a 10-ounce filet mignon (charred in a 1,200-degree oven) with house sauce, and big bites of vanilla crème brûlée for dessert. Add on a Kentucky Old-Fashioned with Bulleit rye and bourbon, Demerara syrup and Angostura bitters. 

But there’s more to Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse than the restaurant itself. If you are wandering around the casino floor and see Bugsy Siegel’s office, you might be tempted to wander in and see what that’s all about. Do! You’ll find yourself popping into the speakeasy known as The Count Room, a swank space with flamingo décor and a beautiful bar (for 21 and older). Seating lines the walls and faces the bar, where you can score plenty of strong cocktails while you share a table of edible tidbits. Live entertainment gets the whole room hopping on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 8 p.m. with The Moonshiners, a popular Las Vegas group that specializes in “Prohibition Pop,” a cool mashup of today and yesteryear.
