Blue Öyster Cult may be a hard rock relic from the past, offering nostalgia to those who remember the ‘70s, but the band will forever remain in the public’s consciousness thanks to Saturday Night Live. Yes, the now classic parody–in which Christopher Walken (as the fictional producer Bruce Dickinson) demands the band add “more cowbell” to their 1976 hit “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper”–introduced the band to a new generation; or, at least, gave that generation an awesome new catchphrase.

Yet, the band is more than their portrayal on SNL, as hits like “Godzilla” and “Burnin’ for You” are inarguably fun and catchy, and their creative sense of melody continues to inspire young, fledgling musicians–a legacy the proverbial Reaper could never claim.
