It’s not often (if ever) that punk bands are honored at Dodger Stadium, but X (whom the Dodgers paid tribute to last month) has a connection to baseball unlike any other American group. Their cover of “Wild Thing” became synonymous with Major League. More importantly, the Los Angeles band is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and the only thing the Dodgers organization loves as much as winning is recognizing L.A. pop culture icons.

X’s celebration was well-deserved, as their relevance to the city runs deep. Their debut, Los Angeles, is routinely recognized as one of the best albums of the ’80s. But what’s most impressive is that the band has mostly stuck together. Though X stopped writing material after Hey Zeus! in 1993, the band has toured regularly since 2004 with the original lineup. That, in itself, is worthy of celebrating.
