Chuck Negron rose to the top with Three Dog Night as the ’60s gave way to the ’70s, scoring 11 top 10 hits and 12 gold albums alongside co-vocalists Danny Hutton and the late Cory Wells. The good times ended in the mid-’70s when their run of hits ended and Negron’s escalating drug addiction caused fissures within the band to widen. Rehab and renewed religious faith preceded a return to the stage, with Negron finding himself in full command of his vocal range as he began delivering hits such as “Joy to the World” and “Easy to Be Hard” as a solo act in the ’90s. In Three Dog Night, Negron sang lead on Harry Nilsson’s “One,” Laura Nyro’s “Eli’s Coming” and Paul Williams’ “An Old Fashioned Love Song,” recording definitive arrangements of those songs and boosting the composers’ careers. The surviving members of Three Dog Night are unlikely to ever reunite, but Negron is happy to sing his share of the hits, with his band helping him deliver them in three-part harmony.
