Maybe we didn’t know it, but right now we need Trevor Noah. When the comedian was hired to replace Jon Stewart as the new host of The Daily Show, the announcement was met with backlash. But the affable Noah’s intelligent, outsider point of view is exactly what’s needed to cut through the chaos and noise that constantly surrounds us.

The South African-born comic who lived through the last years of apartheid has always been at his best when he is commenting on situations he has knowledge of but is removed from to a certain degree. His ability to wring laughs from tragic consequences is only matched by his grounded points of view on the ridiculousness of celebrity culture. For instance, while everyone was taking easy pot shots at Bruce becoming Caitlyn Jenner, Noah took a different route: “Looking at how successful all the Kardashian women are, I don’t blame Bruce Jenner at all.”

With more and more disarray in the world, Noah soothes us with his logical humor.
