You probably know who W.R. “Bud” Thornton is even though the name likely doesn’t ring a bell. The celebrity better known as Billy Bob puts his acting chops aside and returns to his first love, music, as W.R. or Bud with his six-piece rock ’n’ roll band, The Boxmasters.
While some celebrities have bands as vanity projects, Bud and company have legit chops. Part honky-tonk, part ’60s garage rock with a heavy dose of Brit pop, The Boxmasters have been putting out catchy tunes since 2007. Try to listen to the countrified “The Poor House” and not sing along to the chorus, “I’m working on a plan / To save our home / Keep us out of the poor house / Pay off those loans.”
After a long break from touring and intensifying their own sound, The Boxmasters returned to the road in 2015 and have homed in on a prolific release schedule, dropping five albums since that time. There has never been a better time to see The Boxmasters and their lead singer of many names.
