The overwhelming feeling of Cirque du Soleil’s KÀ begins the moment you enter the cavernous theater. It’s a world unto itself, and its atmosphere—lighting that simulates the feeling of dusk, sound effects and performers prowling the area—envelops you before the show even begins.
Then live music, at turns percussive and forceful, at other times somber and calming, hurls you into the story of twins separated in a battle. The tumultuous tale is complemented by a stage that never sits still; KÀ utilizes seven moving stages that simulate everything from cliffs to a beach, and its hair-raising battle scenes place its protagonists at odd angles while 70 arrows are fired by 11 archers (60 others are fired by air cannons).
The tableau in KÀ changes so often you never have a chance to get comfortable; Cirque wants to keep you on the edge of your seat as you try to anticipate what the performers—and the stage itself—will do next. You’ll likely have to make a return visit to take it all in, but this is a world you won’t mind revisiting.
