They've Got It All

With so many genres (and sub-genres), most musical artists are limited in how wide they can cast their net. One way to overcome this obstacle? Go the route of The Marshall Tucker Band by writing and recording songs that defy genre labels. Formed in Spartanburg, S.C., in 1973, The Marshall Tucker Band was certainly at the forefront of the Southern rock revolution that launched in the early 1970s, thanks to such hits as “Heard It in a Love Song” and “Can’t You See.” But by incorporating elements of rock, country, jazz, blues and even gospel into their 22 studio albums, the band has avoided getting pigeonholed. The result? They have a fan base that’s as broad as it is loyal—so loyal, in fact, that after more than 45 years and numerous lineup changes, The Marshall Tucker Band continues to perform 130-plus live shows annually. –Matt Jacob
