True Staying Power

Given that it’s been open since August 1946, it’s only fitting that the Golden Nugget would turn back the clock with a weekly concert series featuring popular artists of yesteryear. Recently, the lineup has featured 1980s rock acts, but this week the clock gets dialed back a bit further with Gary Puckett and The Union Gap, whose songs epitomize the phrase “standing the test of time.”

Formed in San Diego in 1966, the group broke big with 1967’s “Woman, Woman”—the first of six consecutive gold-certified records. In 1968 alone, the pop group sold more records than any other artist and finished the year with five Top 100 singles. By comparison, James Brown had two, while The Beatles and Aretha Franklin each had three. However, as quickly as the band’s star rose, it vanished; creative differences led to a roster reshuffling, and by 1971 the Union Gap disbanded, but a decade later Puckett enjoyed a rebirth as a regular on the oldies’ circuit, and ever since he’s toured as a solo artist and with a retooled version of the Union Gap, keeping the classics alive. –Matt Jacob

Eureka!

Eureka!

Eureka!, which has a couple of dozen locations around the country, doesn’t feel like a chain. The warm, modern-industrial, beer-and-burger-bar vibes are closer to the feelings you’ll get from the handful of cool restaurants that surround it.

That’s because the food and drinks are stellar. The all-American beer and bourbon selections make for an exciting tasting experience; recent tap selections include Odell’s Green Coyote Tomatillo Sour and local fave Able Baker’s Atomic Duck IPA.

If you’re pairing your brew with a burger, consider the Fresno Fig with sweet fig marmalade, melted goat cheese, bacon and spicy porter mustard, or the bison burger with bacon-jalapeño jam, grilled peppers and onions and smoked mozzarella. There are other irresistible entrées, from blackened fish tacos with avocado and mango salsa to an au jus steak sandwich with horseradish mustard aioli.

The extensive starters menu could also be a beer- or booze-pairing adventure. Osso buco riblets and Polish sausage mini corn dogs are tons of fun, while falafel bites are lighter but still delicious, thanks to tzatziki, feta, pickled red onions, fresh dill and red chimichurri sauce. And be sure to check out their weekend brunch, where you can sip on $5 bloody marys and mimosas and dine on faves like steak n’ eggs, chilaquiles and the sweet, fluffy bread pudding French toast. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff
